New lease triples size of Lynn Headwaters WITH THE stroke of a pen, Lynn Headwaters regional! park in North Vancouver more than tripled in size on Oct. Bovironment, Lands and Parks Minister John Cashore and Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) parks committec chairman Lou Sekora signed a 30-year lease at a ceremony in the North Vancouver park, turning over a substantial amount of land in the rugged mountain basin, which Is bordered by the Capilano and Scymour watersheds. Cashore said the lease would add 3,900 hectares (9,634 acres) of Crown land to the pack. The cenvirenment minister described Lynn Headwaters as a “a highly accessible wilderness arca that can serve the whole Lower Mainland’ and should therefore be managed by the regional district on behalf of ali its member municipalities. Before the new lease was sign- ed, Lynn Headwaters regional park encompassed 1,685 hectares (4,164 acres). Sekora said the GVRD will proceed with trail expansion in the newly acquired areas and prepare legal surveys of the land. “Once the entire parcel is surveyed, the GVRD can then ap- ply to the province for a free Crown grant, making even clearer the commitment of the land to long-term park use,’’ said Sekora. A Crown grant would mean the aewly leased land would be owned in title by the GVRD. By A.P. McCredie News Reporter in a GVRD report this summer, the securing of additional regional parkland for the Lower Mainland's increasing population was identified as the most impor- tant, and itaniediate, action the GVRD should undertake, “This tong-term lease is a posi- tive move by both the province and the GVRD for creating more parkland,'' said North Van- couver-Lonsdale MLA David Schreck. In addition to trail creation and improvement in the park, the GVRD and North Vancouver City are working to relocate a small heritage building in the area to serve as a warming hut and hiking information centre. “The GVRD is committed to maintaining and patrolling this vast wilderness area,’’ added Sekora. .
