And did you know that steel manufacturers put steel through as many as 50 tests before it is ready for shipment to car manufac- turers? What consumers do know is that they want a better buiit vehi- cle that withstands rust and other corrosive damages and maintains an attractive appearance for many years. To meet these demands, steel manufacturers are working closely with car manufacturers to deter- mine effective products that counteract corrosion. During the 1980s, there was a major increase in the use of precoated steels used by automobile manufacturers to combat corrosion. According to Dr. Brian Att- wood, LTV Steel's general man- ager of research and quality con- trol, the principal precoated steels used in automotive applications today are metallic coated sheets, typically. of either pure zinc or zinc-alloy compositions such as zinc nickel. From 1980 to 1989, the ship- ments of coated sheet steel for automotive consumption have shown 2 four-fold increase as automakers respond to consumer demands for longer lasting cars and trucks. These new steels build-in corro- sion protection, rather than ad- ding it later, as was done in the past with waxes and seam sealers applied after the. car had been manufactured. Because of the increasing cost of producing automobiles today, steel makers are working with car manufacturers to develop improv- ed steel which is stronger, lighter, and has the anticorrosive proper- ties necessary to provide con- sumers with a better value for their investment. : There are typically two categories of rust-resisting coated sheet steel: hot-dipped and elec- troplated, Attwood explains. The base cold-rolled steel is coated during the steel finishing process to assure better corrosion resistance. . In addition, depending on where the steel will be used, the anticorrosive stcels must also be easy to stamp, bend and shape, as well as provide good formability, spot-weldability and paintability during vehicle manufacturing. The hot-dipped coated steels are produced by a continuous process of immersing the steel! strip into a bath of the desired molten metal. This is the most cost-effective way to deposit heavy, corrosion-resistant coatings on Steel. Hot-dipped ccatings include zinc, zinc-alloy and aluminum. The zinc coating is used mainly on unexposed surfaces of an automobile. With zinc and zinc- alloy coated steel, exposure to wet conditions does not result in rusting at the damaged site because of the sacrificial proper- ties of the zinc coating. Electroplated steel sheet is pro- duced by a process in which a Negatively charged steel strip is passed between positively charged anicdes which plate the surface. It is used for outer autobody panels, primarily because of the resulting painted surface appearance. Its formability and weldability also are exceilent. Duplex coatings are designed to provide two layer interactions. A thick bottom layer provides the buik of the corrosion protection to the substrate, while the top layer enhances other desirable Properties — such as weldability, paintability, formability and sur- face appearance — for automotive body sheet applications. Master the computer with summer Classes NORTH SHORE Continuing Education will be offering summer computer classes at the Lucas Centre at 2132 Hamilton in North Vancouver. “Summer holidays provide an excellent opportunity to take intensive computer classes that would be impossible dur- ing the working year,’’ says program coordinator Joan Fleischer. For those who are unfamiliar with computers, a good start- ing point is the course An In- troduction to the IBM. It begins on Monday, July 6 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and covers the basics of personal computers. Once the basics have been mastered, you can move on to one of the popular and prac- tical word processing classes. Two eight-day intensive In- troduction ,to Word Perfect classes will run from 9 to 11:30 ° a.m. Participants can choose either a Monday-to-Thursday class beginning July 6 or a Tuesday-to-Friday class start- ing on July 7. There will also be an Inter- mediate Word Perfect class of- fered from 9 to 11:30 a.m., Monday to Thursday between Suly 20 to 31. “While many people under- stand how to use a computer, they become frustrated when their typing speed is too slow,”’ says Fleischer. To help overcome this prob- lem, a basic keyboarding class is being offered to improve both speed and accuracy for adults and for children 10 years or older. Both the adult and children’s keyboarding classes run Monday to Friday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The adult pro- gram begins on June 29 and ends July 24; the children’s program runs from 10:30 a.m. to noon beginning on July 6 and ending July 17. Pre-registration is recom- mended for these popular courses. For more information, call North Shore Continuing Education at 986-8888.
