Actually, the year of the comet
was 1871 when Napoleon failed to
uncork an enormous bottle of
Lafitte wine. When wine appraiser
Margaret Howard (Penelope Ann
Miller) stumbles across this in-
credibly rare find in the recesses of
a Scottish castle, the price is con-
servatively set at a million dollars.
Not bad for the first day on the
job.

Dashing Errol-Fiynn-wannabe
Oliver Plexico (Tim Daly) arrives,
supposedly to escort the bottle to
a connoisseur, but this Bud-
drinker would rather uncork Mag-

Bie.
Naturally, she rolls her eyes at
his boorish arrogance, but like all

screen prissies, she’s just a
smoldering volcano waiting to
erupt under his charm.

The most desperate villain
doesn’t even want the wine for its
value. The aging, sinister resear-

The chase takes us on a scenic
tour from the Isle of Skye to the
French Riviera by helicopter,
rowboat and rock-scaling.

The show runs until May 17 at
the Jack Gibson Gallery in
Richmond (8940-A River Road,
across from Bridgepoint Market).
This weekend (May 9 and 10) ar-
tists will be working on location
in celebration of Mother's Day.

Miller is likable enough, her vocal
mannerisms tread dangerously
close to Melanie Griffith.

But at least she has some
presence. Sitcom star Tim Daly lets
his moustache do most of the talk-
ing.

Still, the scenery is lovely,
Hummie Mann's music adds Gael-
ic charm, and the whole affair
wraps up in 90 harmless minutes.

As comets go, it’s not Halley’s
but it’s no Kahoutec either.

Surrealism and comedy-drama
are awkwardly mixed in this piffle
about successful car dealer Gerard
Depardieu cheating on his drop-
dead gorgeous wife, Carole Bou-
quet, with a plain temporary sec-
retary, Josiane Balasko. Hence the
title. (Low self-esteem or what?)

Lydia (Diana Rigg}, an acid-
tongued journalist, retreats to her
country cottage to lick the wounds
from a broken romance, dragging
along her long-suffering vegetarian
friend (Elaine Paige) for company.

But in a village of colorful focals
like a handsome priest, a randy
doctor and a mute, emotionally
disturbed teenager, peace and
quiet are rare. And those ghostly
peals of laughter don’t help.

Another solid BBC comedy that
charms with dry wit and in-
telligence.
