Support group
holds garage
fundraiser

THE NORTH Shore branch of
the Friends of Schizophrenics is
holding a fundraising garage
sale on Saturday, May 9 from
10a.m. to 2 p.m.

Proceeds from the event will
help support the non-profit
organization’s mandate to pro-
vide support services to people
who have been stricken with
schizophrenia and to supply in-
formation about the disease to
the public.

The sale will take place at
Highlands United Church, 3225
Edgemont Blvd. in North Van-

tower win design awards

A NORTH Vancouver ar-
chitect who designed the
Grandstand at the Town
Centre Park Stadium in
Coquitlam has received an
honourable mention in the
Lieutenant-Governor of
B.C. Medal in Architecture
design awards.

The architect and project man-
ager for the award-winning design
is long-time North Vancouver res-
ident Melanie Marchand of
Phillips Barratt Engineers and Ar-
chitects.

Said the jury about the design:
“Here is a suspended tension

structure fabric and steel cables, .,
nicely attached to steel masts and °

struts that is virtually as weightless

as it looks, not always the case .
with this sort of building techno- -

logy.’’

When the District of Coquitlam
was awarded the 199) B.C. Sum-
mer Games, the municipality sear-
ched for a company to design the
new grandstand in time for the
games.

Phillips Barratt Engineers and
Architects was their first choice.
