The _Shopping, one must con- cede, is not going to challenge Rodeo Drive, but there are to be had at Nevada Bob’s, and some eye-catching signs, such as one store which advertises ‘‘guns, ammo, picnic supplies.’ Hotels are more than adequate. Windshield scrapers come in handy, for winter days at the Arizona Golf Resort can start with crisp mornings, and although it soon warms up the desert air stays as fresh as you’d expect at a mountain resort. This is wonderful weather for golf and tennis, and of course that’s what draws most visitors here. The clear skies, perfect for flying, are often criss-crossed by training jets from the nearby Williams air force base. Up at Red Mountain Ranch it takes a clear head to control the ball and find Pete Dye’s target landing zones, but what a lovely golf course it is, lots of character and beauty created out of a littie imagination and a lot of moving the desert around. It’s remarkable to walk up a lush, green fairway bordered by cactus trees, to see in the distance the dramatic bulk of Red Moun- tain, while in between there’s des- ert, tumbleweed and subterranean — in winter —- rattlesnakes. The natives are friendly year- round. In fact, from the youthful John Clark at San Marcos to the retirees at Venture Out in Mesa, you couldn’t meet a more amiable bunch of people.
