Property assessments have risen steeply all over the Lower Mainland, and that is particularly true of the North Shore. Many senior citizens are alarmed at the sizeable in- crease over their last year’s taxes and are concerned about their ability to pay. Some are even considering selling their homes and, for others, it is an added strain on their budget. For these people tax deferment is a realistic alter- native. To defer taxes means that you can have the pay- ment of your municipal property taxes put off until the property changes hands, either because it is sold or because the owner dies. The deferment of property taxes is a provincial government program which allows senior citizens to remain in their own homes despite a possible problem witn paying the property taxes. In order to qualify for tax deferment you must be a senior citizen, and this year, for the first time, anyone 60 or over is included as a senior, or you must be a widow or widower in straightened circumstances or a handicapped person who receives GAIN (the provin- cial Guaranteed Available Income for Need Act). You can get the application form from your local city hall, You will find that it is not a complicated form to fill out. Remember to enclose your current year’s tax notice when you return the form. You wiil have to re-apply for the tax every year. It does not go on from year to year automatically. aee The North Shore Information and Voiunteer Cen- tre, a United Way agency, is located at 1060 Roosevelt Cres., North Vancouver, B.C.
