28 - Wednesday, March 15, 1989 - North Shore News entertainment NOW Actor’s Store tirst for B.C. “EH” just doesn’t cut it in the movies. Local businessman Andrew Van Slee has found a way for aspiring Canadian actors to change their life-long exclamations ~ for a mere $19.95. “You can’t have people saying “eh.” it should be “huh,” says Van Slee, who recently opened the Actor's Store on Lonsdale Street in North Vancouver. Dialect tapes are only one of many show-biz items Van Slee selis in his store. Also available are plays and movie scripts, trade newspapers and magazines — even alarm clocks and answering machines for busy movie people. All books and educational mate- tials are imported straight from Hol’ wood, with the exception of the odd Canadian trade magazine. A photo studio located upstairs produces eight-by-ten glossies for actor's portfolios, and there's even a ‘Starving Actor’s Corner’ which sells second hand an- swering machines, books, and other materials. Van Slee, 26, a former Sentinel high schooi grad who attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts but quit after one year, also owns North Vancouver's ATV Studios. He opened The Actor's Store to take advantage of B.C.’s booming film industry. “There's a real need for this type of store. The film industry is getting busier and busier, and there’s no place for actors to get this stuff,” he said, admitting however that ‘We're putting our necks on the line. it may be too a Se a iy NEWS photo Mike Wakefleld LOCAL BUSINESSMAN Andrew Yan Slee, owner of The Actor’s Store which opened fast month in North Vancouver, displays some of the books available to budding thespians. early for this.” Nevertheless, Van Slee is confident that the influx of movie magnates to the North Shore — Peter Breck and Stephen J. Cannell, for example — will keep The Actor’s Store in the biack. For three days, March 24 to 26, Tony Barr, vice-president of cur- BAU-XI ———NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! One of the areas discussed is Critical to the entire proces.: is there a market out there i: a self-published book? The a:iswer is an unqualified ‘yes’ and perhaps the best way to illustrate this is to take a giance at Wise’s highly suc- cessful distribution and marketing company, Sandhill. This is the only trade book distribution and marketing firm based outside the Lower Mainland. Formed by Wise in 1984, the company specializes in small press and self-published works (of some 300 Sandhill titles, roughly 75 are self published). In less than four years, this B.C. company has come to occupy one of the top positions in its field in the province and self-published authors have played a major role in this achievement. Clearly, the self-published book has estab- lished a secure and profitable niche for itself. In the weeks ahead BOOKS NOW will look at several self- published titles and talk with the men and women who wrote them. We'll examine their reasons for taking the self-publishing route as well as their personal stories of problems and, of course, success. Cast Aluminum Lawn Furniture NEVER RUSTS 3PCESET %319” 5 PCE.
