SPEER RNA SE EE RAEN GO on rarer MLAILBOX ‘Preserve Maplewood Fiats’ Dear Editor: Maplewood Flats is an_ in- valuable wetland providing food and shelter for wildlife and a source of education, enjoyment and tranquillity for the human community. Now, this last remnant of a once-extensive wetland is also jeopardized by plans for develop- ment by the Vancouver Port Cor- poration and the District of North Vancouver. Any development other than natural enhancement of Maplewood. Flats only serves to perpetuate the attitude that economic interests take priority over environmental ones, Rather than leaving a few bits and pieces of the flats intact, which is a flimsy gesture of token environmental awareness, those responsible for the area’s future should curb their developmental impulse and recognize that Maplewood Flats, all that survives of a diminished wetland, should remain untouched for future generations. Maplewood Flats is a unique and complex wilderness area; each particular feature, from mudflats to woodland, contributes to the ecosystern. To destroy any specific habitat would be detrimental to the whole and therefore the area must be preserved in its entirety. Department stores and markets won't exactly integrate in- to marshes and mudflats. The disappearance of wetland habitats on the North Shore repre- sented an approach to urban development that is no longer ac- ceptable. We .must recognize that Maplewood Fiats has an intrinsic value that is immeasurable in Monetary terms, and therefore must be left to flourish in its natu- ral state. Heather LeDuc, Research Assistant, City alderman states Dear Editor: When we consider the matter of dogs residing in our community we must come io some terms just as we must in considering every aspect of community life. My position has always been that dogs should not run at large and that dogs should be licensed. I believe that dog owners are ir- responsible when they allow their pets to wander at large and cause harm. However, there are times when any dog may get loose. A visitor may fail to close a door. At present, the penalties in North Vancouver are significantly Ecgema R I O position on loose dogs higher than those in other com- munities of the Lower Mainland. My position is as follows: I have always supported penalties to discourage owners from allowing dogs to run loose but I believe our penalties in North Vancouver should be in line with other municipalities in the Lower Mainland. If the amount of penalties is so high, some owners cannot claim their pets because of lack of funds. The SPCA will board the animal until it is adopted. If the SPCA is not successful, the animal will be destroyed. . Stella Jo Dean, Alderman North Vancouver City ORR ES ERS super-.
