ONE YEAR STAY Local students jeave for Japan THREE NORTH Shore university graduates will be leaving for Japan at the end of July for one year to help promote internaticnal exchange between Canada and Japan. Catherine Barnes and Dawn Goodman of North Vancouver, and Michele Louie of West Vancouver will join 20 other B.C. teachers as English language education instructors in Japan. Barnes will be teaching at the Funabashi Board of Education in Chiba, Goodman will teach at the Nara A all thru the month of July Monday to Thursday only Board of Education, and Louie will teach at the Kumamoto Board of Education. Gne hundred and twenty Canadians in addition to more than 1,300 young people from the U.S., Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland were chosen for this year’s program. This is the first year Canadians have participated in the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program. The program began in 1987 and has already received rec- ognition for its professionalism from teachers abroad. 29 ~ Wednesday, July 27, 1988 - North Shore News Carson grad wins Rotary schoiarsnip FOR SEVERAL years the Lions Gate Rotary Club of North Van- couver has given a_ scholarship award of $500 to a graduating senior in one of the North Van- couver secondary schools to help in advanced vocational training. Ron Parker of Carson Graham was the recipient for 1988. This year, because Rotary is devoted to community service, a new award of $100 is being made to one student at each school. This award is one the students can earn on their own and does not depend on class rank, grade point average, or other usual measures. The decision in each case is based on significant interest in and ser- vice to the community. The stu- dents are outstanding in school EES SESE ARSENE service and community service. The group includes work with Lions Gate Hospital candy stripers, work with elementary school students on the North Shore, and work with the YMCA Special needs program as well as with cancer and heart foundations, and with CounterAttack. Rotary intends to make this award annually. Mike Adkins, Rotary president this year, believes the award will encourage student participation in the community.
