Room's color reveals personality

PSYCHOLOGISTS, decorators
and designers ave long been ac-
quainted with the meaning and use
of colors.

Black is usually associated with
death, night and the powers of
darkness. Green, on the other
hand, is considered a_ restful,
soothing color, while red is often
associated with fire. Red-haired
people are often thought to be
emotional.

In the same way, color in your
home can reveal your personality
and also alter a room's ap-
pearance. The appearance of space
can change just by changing color.

For example, pale tones, being
airy and open, reflect light and
create the effect of more than there
actually is, while dark pastel
shades will make a room appcar
smaller.

Color also affects depth percep-
tion. Dimensions in long, narrow
rooms can be evened out by paint-
ing short walls with warm colors
and longer walls with neutral, cool
shades.

One dark wall in a very large
room can appear to lower a ccil-
ing, while the use of turquoise on
basement ceilings gives the effect
of increasing a room’s apparent
height.

One of the casiest ways to decide
on a color scheme is to pick a pat-
tern you like and ther choose the

colors. First, you can choose the
pattern’s background color for the
floors and walls and then select its
next major area of color for the
upholstery, bedspread or drapery.
Another way to begin a color
scheme is to take your favorite
painting and use it as the basis for
your background, contrast and ac-
cent colors, or take the color tones
from a decorative floor covering.
