West Vancouver's most ambitious townhome development is now taking shape on a former movie studio site high up on Hollyburn Mountain. Polygon Development Limited, after its success with The Summit of Panorama Village, is now embarked on a new project that could become one of North America’s most prestigious condominium residences: Westpointe. Michael Audain Westpointe, now at the framing stage, promises to be spectacular. There will be a total of 42 spacious duplex and attached homes with a view that takes in an endless horizon of city, sea, and mountain. Polygon president Michael Audain explains how Westpointe was conceived, “When we were building The Summit a couple of years aga, we realized that the Panorama Studios site next door could make an outstanding location for luxury condominiums, so with the support of the Panorama Village residents anxious to get rid of the ugly movie studio with its annoying all hours traffic, and with the encouragement of the municipality, the land was rezoned to permit us to build six homes per acre? ‘This density was too low for apartmenits, so we decided to build large townhomes which seem to be in short supply on the North Shore? Audain explains, “We anticipate that the buyers will include both West emerge from Holl Advertisement Up to 30% during our Goodrich All Season Winter Tire Sale and Ski for BFGoodrich FREE! Vancouver couples downsizing from large single homes, as well as international business people who want to have a pied-a-terre in West Vancouver. To make our plans possible we retained internationally renowned architect Rick Hulbert? West Vancouver based Hulbert, already well known for his innovative residential designs across Canada and the U.S., and former president of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, has lately been working on major tourism ‘elated projects on Australia’s Gold Coast. Hulbert recounts that realizing Polygon’s vision for the movie studio was not easy. He explains, “The site with its fantastic views is certainly unique, but in order for all the homes to share these views, we had to essentially reconfigure the mountainside back to where it was before the movie studio was excavated, and then design the project as if the mountain had always been there. This has involved significant sums in foundation costs, but it's already obvious that the task has been worth it” Westpointe's first homes, expected to be completed in early 1988, will have some interesting design touches with eleven-foot ceilings providing a great feeling of openness in the main living areas. Natural light will pour through the skylights warming the brass hardware fittings, and gleaming through open glass stair handrails. Interior finishings will include marble and oak floors in selected areas. Care seems to have been taken to focus in the home towards the panoramic view. But what type of home buyers is Westpointe likely to appeal to? Rick Hulbert says, “The people that are going to live here are likely to possess three specific qualities and we have tried to anticipate these in our design. They are going to be very value conscious in the sense that they want their home to be a good long term investment, secondly they are going to want something a cut above the typical condominium, something unique. And finally, we have to recognize that people who are going to live at Westpointe are likely to have earned a certain status in life and this needs to be recognized in the form of the architecture and the environment? While scores of construction workers now team over the site every day, interior designers are busy consuiting with the marketing team at Polygon’s head office in downtown Vancouver. For prospective buyers who don't mind wearing hard hats and rubber as Jacqueline Askew boots, Jacqueline Askew, sales manager (telephone 922-9859), will soon be previewing some of the newly framed residences. Westpointe is located at the top of Folkestone Way, off the upper levels highway in West Vancouver,
