HAVE YOU ever wondered how
florists manage to obtain beautiful
iris flowers throughout the year,
even though garden irises usually
only bloom for a short period in
June?

The secret is in the type of iris
they grow. The bearded iris (Iris
germanica), the one most com-
monly grown in Canada, is strictly
seasonal. The variety used in fore-
ing is the Dutch iris, which forms
corms rather than the usual
rhizomes.

Although it normally blossoms
in Jate spring in British Columbia,
it can be easily forced to bloom in
any month of the year, a real boon
to both florists and cut flower
lovers.

Ironically, the Dutch iris is not
native to the Netherlands at all. It

crossbreeding between several
species including the Spanish. iris
(leis xiphium). However, the type
of plant known as the Dutch iris
indeed was developed in Holland
and it is still grown there on a large
scale.

Available in a wide range of
colors, Dutch irises such as Pro-
fessor Blaauw (bright blue) should
be purchased when the buds are
still closed but have begun to take
on their brilliant hues. They will
normally last for about five days
after cutting, but you can add
another two to three days to their
life by adding cut flower food to
the vase,

And of course, the Dutch iris
can be grown easily in the home
garden for late spring or early
summer blooming.
