16 - Friday, June 5, 1987 - North Shore News A NATIONAL day of hunger for Mozambique should be held June 29, says World Vision Canada. Dr. William J. Newell, executive director of the organization, has called for the prime minister, pro- vincial premiers anc the Canadian public to endorse and participate in a National Day of Hunger for Mozambique. “On June 29, World Vision Canada will encourage Canadians to go without food for the day and make a donation to World Vision or other Canadian agencies pro- viding relief to suffering people in Mozambique,” explains Newell. “Over the last three years, most African countries have had good rains and good crops and experi- ence something of a turn around in the food situation; but Mozambi- que has gone the other way,”’ says Newell. “It is the tragic scene of a war — a relentless 10-year struggle against guerrillas that has wasted the country, dismantled its roads, health system and economy and displaced as many as a million people. “With the potential of matching grants from CIDA, we hope to raise over $5 million to aid desper- ately needy Mozambicans,’’ says Newell. Emergency food relief, direct assistance to refugees within Mozambique, and water and agricultural development are key components in World Vision Canada’s planned activities for Mozambique. “Outside assistance is required to save the lives of victims of war, famine and the politics of southern Africa,” says Newell. ‘‘In the face of root causes that an organization such as ours has no ability to over- come, we are convicted by our mandate to do something to help. We acknowlege the political dif-- ficulties, yet need to act quickly regardless."' World Vision has worked out an exchange that will see Canadian grain going to Zimbabwe this month in return for that country giving corn to Mozambique. “Wheat is foreign to rural pea- sants in Mozambique,’’ explains Newell. ‘‘But corn is one of their staples.’' Newell and J. Don Scott, who will succeed Newell as executive director in September, will be making a cross-country tour from 8 to 15 June communicating the desperate needs of Mozambique to Canadians. They will visit Van- couver, Calgary, Moncton, Saint John and Halifax.
