WHAT A great new direction taken by the North Shore News in producing neighborhood newspapers focusing specifically on our various North Shore communities. I am pleased to have this opportu- nity to contribute information and updates on what's happening in North Vancouver District that may affect your ‘‘backyard”’. | RECENTLY AIRED Rezoning and redevelopment of the corner of Capilano and Ridgeway — the Canyon Gardens property — was approved | by council recently. The proposal entails constrac- tion of 82 residential units with 4.7 acres along the Capilano riverbank dedicated as part of the Capilano. River Regional Park. ; ! We will certainly miss the C:.n- yon Gardens and its much enjoyed facilities, however, community support was widespread for the redevelopment proposal. - i COMING SOON ; Two development proposals of interest and some controversy in the Capilano/North Lonsdale area have been under recent council ‘consideration: | e A rezoning application for the | ‘Mountain’s Edge Development at /3695 Bluebonnet and 3759 Edge- _ / mont -went to a_ neighborhood ' public meeting Aug. 18. Residents were given the oppor- tunity to ask questions and infor- mally discuss the proposal with the applicant so that such issues as density, type of housing and traffic impact were aired. On Aug. 22 council then consid- | ered whether the rezoning should | proceed to a formal public hearing and the proposal was rejected. The proponent has since ap- peared as.a delegation before council on a down-scaled proposal for 18 units and another public in- formation meeting will be held on Oct. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Highlands United Church. e A public hearing on zoning bylaw amendments within the area of the North Lonsdale Plan is scheduled for Oct. 17 at the District Municipal Hall. The intent is to ensure that zon- MAYOR Marilyn Baker ing in the area conforms with the existing land use and is in com- pliance with the recently adopted plan. Information on such items is available through the clerk’s office’ r at the North Vancouver District Municipal Hall, 987-7131. REMINDER Council sits as a quasi-judicial body during public hearings. Therefore, following the close of a public hearing, council members cannot legally receive further. sub- _ missions on the matter from ‘either side’. Any letters or petitions subse- quently sent to council will be returned — so make sure to get your viewpoint forward early on- any items of concern to you. VALUABLE INFORMATION Your property: assessment notices will have been mailed to you last week. These notices establish the value of your proper- ty for tax purposes in 1989 and 1990. A careful review of the assessed figure is -wise particularly as it compares to other properties. The B.C. Assessment Authority can tell you the average increase of assessed values in your category (i.e. residential, business). If your assessment increase is much higher than the average it will mean next year’s property taxes will see a greater than average increase. The municipality has no control over the assessed values. They are set by the assessment authority and any enquiries or appeal should be made through that agency at 984- 9751. Be sure to check the deadline | dates on your assessment notice if you wish to appeal. _ ADJOURNMENT Experience is the hardest kind of ‘teacher.
