TIME FOR A CHANGE

Dad wants his day his way

JUST THE other day | asked my dad what he
wanted for Father’s Day. ‘‘Change the date,’’ he

said without hesitation.

I was taken back a step
because | was expecting the
customary, “Oh, socks or
something’, and not this
adamant announcement
from father.

As if it were his new
found crusade, he went on
to say the head of the fami-
ly, or the old man as most
fathers are better known,
will never get his deserved
tribute until his day is moved
ahead «£ Mother’s Day —
the rand occasion that
drains the kids of their cash
and sentiment.

All Fool’s Day in April
was his choice for the ceie-
bration. What better day to
honor al} those dear ol’ dads
who are still making pay-
ments on their wife's
Mother's Day gala from two
years ago, he reasoned.

And because Father’s Day
was started by a woman —
Mrs. John Bruce Dodd in

1910 — motives behind
the occasion are’ highly
suspect to him. ‘

Mrs. Dodd planted the
roots to this time-honored
tradition in Spokane,
Washington, seventy-five
years ago. A pioneer daugh-
ter of a Civic War vet, she
wanted to honor her daddy

and fathers for the American
way of life.

Dad thinks it was a plot to
guilt all fathers into doing
the bidding of wife and
children. Even on his ‘‘so-
called”? day.

Kids who have fluttered
away from the nest develop
their own subtle ways of let-
ting. pop know that just
making it home for the big
occasion is in itself a
“magnificent gesture’’.

Knowing I shouldn't I
ventured to ask for examples
to support his theory of fa-
ther’s relativity to the fami-
ly.
“Do you remember the
expensive Father’s Day card
you sent me while you were
away at school?" Feigning
stupid, | shook my head.

“It was an = extravagant
card but so was the overdue
telephone bill that came with
it.”

When Mrs. Dodd con-
ceived the idea of Father's
Day, she saw it as a chance
of writing a special note or
letter to mark the occasion.
Something sentimental and
respectful, an expression of
love not expenses was what
she had in mind.

“Yeah, but Dad...”

“‘Just once | would like to
have my favorite dinner —
corned beef and cabbage and

mmmmm butterscotch pie,"’
he said. ‘‘But oh no, every
year my vittles get vetoed for
a barbecue.”*

Entertainment for
Mother's Day is never a
problem. Of course, dinner
out at a special restaurant
and a bill which father says
he usually has to mortgage
the house for. And a dig
deeper into his pockets for a
movie or a play.

You know Dad does have
a point, after all doesn't fa-
ther know best. Maybe we
should move Father’s Day
forward, or at least let him
have his day his way.

I signed his petition.

Especially after I heard
that Mom was going to give
him that ultra deluxe
microwave oven she’s been
wanting for the past two
years.
