THREE NORTH SHORE RESIDENTS will soon em- bark on an international trek under the auspise of Cana- dian Crossroads Interna- tional (CCI) that will take them to Third World Coun- tries to live and work for four months.’ CCI is a non-profit volun- teer organization that seeks to educate people in Canada about development issues through the first-hand expe- tience of its volunteers, who spend.four to six months in a Third World country. “The focus of CCI is to about International Development,”’. says Denise Helm who will leave for Nigeria at the end of this month. “The work is almost incidental::.The. focus is on the. individual and: what he can Jearn,!? leave for India in September, education and action © ia. Four to five months before their actual placements begin, volunteers attend weekly development educa- tion meetings’ which may .focus on anything from ‘Women in. Development to Analyzing the Media. A - regional orientation weekend is held and workshops and lectures are given to better prepare the participant for some experiences they may encounter, All three volunteers agreed that culture shock would be an obsticle to overcome. “it Is going to be the big- gest problem to deal with, but you have to take the at- titude that there is only a limited amount of time available for you to achieve as much as you can,’’ says Sylvester. Although CCI defers most of the travel and living ex- penses. for the volunteers, participants must raise $1400 to put towards their trip.
