WV vwetos fish farm

A SALMON FARM
scheme four kilometres
north of Horseshoe Bay just
doesn't smell right West Van
District council decided
Monday.

So aldermen turned down
the proposal by David Whif-
fin who wants to establish
the fish farm which would
be accessed by Pasco Raad.

Whilfin’s attempt to sway
council was his second in re-
cent months,

Council had denied his
earlier application after a
report from municipal staff
suggested that Whiffin did
not have the appropriate
approvals.

Whiffin had secured those
approvals from federal and
provincial fisheries and en-
vironment agencies -— some
of which were in hand when
the first applicution was
made — but could not sway
council.

Whiffin wants to establish
the sea pen *'salmon ranch”’
for at least a year to deter-
mine if his proposed
methods of raising salmon
would be productive.

He says the combination
of natural environment and
easy access make the Pasco
Road site a natural for such
a project.

Council, and residents of
Pasco Road, disagree.

Residents
Pasco. Road, have already
strongly indicated to the
municipality they don’t like
the idea.
