TORONTO (UPC) - Canada’s historic economic advantage ‘in’ the’ resource sector is disappearing and a new vision of the national economy is needed to meet the challenges of the future, says Imasco Ltd. chairman PaulPare. - Pare told a Canadian Club luncheon that Canada was moving into a. “fun- damentally different” economic era requiring a “major transition” of the economy. “We have no choice but to become more diversified, less resource dependent, more globally oriented, more competitive and: less protectionist,” he said. Pare said Canada must make a “unique commitment to productivity” which will require that government, business and labor cooperate to identify and overcome obstacles. Those obstacles, he said, were found in government and management policies as well as collective agreements. Government has a critical role to play in the restructuring of the Canadian economy, he said, by creating a “calmer, more confident climate” and ending inter-governmental competition. He said governments must also abandon legislation which inhibits productivity and protects § inefficient operations. Business is most productive when left in the competitive world of free enterprise, he said. The US.dollar Savings account that _ doesnt put a price on convenience.
