AFFORDABLE hous- ing got a boost from North Vancouver City Council Monday night, when council voted to turn land at 15th and Bewicke over to the Greater Vancouver Housing Corporation (GVHC) for non-profit, subsidized housing. The decision was made over the protests of Alderman Stella Jo Dean, who took a stand against the City offering any more non- profit housing. “It (the project) doesn’t mean that North Van- couverites will get this housing. It could be anyone in B.C.,” Dean told council. “How much affordable housing can one little municipality give?” she asked. She reminded council of the senior citizens’ complex on_First Street, “which does not pay taxes”, Kinsmen Towers, Lions Gate Hospital andthe ecreation centre. “We have given so much in North Vancouver,” she said. Dean also questioned the wisdom of allowing what she claimed would be high density housing in a ravine, where it would = affect drainage The proyect would also destroy the City’s plan to provide a linkage of parks Arson suspected in ARSON is suspected as the cause of the latest fire started in an underground parking lot in North Van- couver carly Saturday.
