Dear Editor:

More than 25 years as
Bandmaster of the North
Vancouver Youth Band is
certainly a remarkable
record and commendable;
but under the leadership of
the late Mr. Art Smith this

great band has chalked up at
least 40 trophies.
We have the Karen

Magnussen Arena, named

for ‘a very talented young.

skater; also the Ron An-
drew's pool for the late
Mayor of N.V. District. I
find no fault with the naming
of these facilities that meet

the recreational needs of a

community. However, under
the. baton of Mr. Smith
scores of students became so
proficient that year. after
year trophies were added
and the list prew.

Are we the citizens of
North Vancouver willing to

” have these’ trophies packed
‘in cartons off in a corner, or
shall we be proud of: the

youngsters responsible for
the outstanding ability to
perform, and of the man who

was able to bring out the best ~

in them? Many of the
students have gone on to
University. with music their
major subject, while others

joined the Vancouver
Symphony.
These trophies which

speak well of Mr, Smith and
the band members past and
some present should be on
display for all to view
permanently. Also as a
challenge to present and
upcoming members under
our new Bandmaster, Mr..
Peter Murray.

Let's have these trophies
on display.
