IT’S amazing how a coat of paint can change the whole look of a house, says contributor Barb Lunter, who transformed her home from
Tudor to country cottage. It can be easy to overlook the potential and charm of older homes, but with a little time and effort, the result
is a look and feel that can be difficult to duplicate when building a new house, says the do-it-yourseif home renovator.

Home’s setting was wild but charming

OUR first impression. of the house and property
was a mixed one.

Tt was clear that this property was extremely dishevelled but
promising. We could see a small Tudor nestled among a jumble
of ivy vines and overgrown perennials. A concrete path led
somewhere behind the house (which we later found out to be
the front door) and ivy covered a good one-third of the front.
There were no established property boundaries and the gar-
dens seemed to run on forever, Multiple driveways had evolved
over time and the creek was overgrown.

However, in its wildness, the place was very charming.

The previous longtime owners had a love of gardening and
the potential was enormous.

After a brief walk around the yard and a quick tour through
the house it was mutually agreed that we could do something
inviting with this special place.

We decided that there were four main areas to focus on.
We needed to create a simple theme, consolidate the look,
improve the functionality of the space and work on specific
safety issues.

IT’S amazing how
adaptable we human
beings are.

Why, just a couple of
weeks ago | was writing about
the tearful farewell 1 had with
nyy oldest sun as he left home
for university, and he’s already
been back. ;

“Mom,” came the deep
voice came across the tle-
phone wires last Wednesday.
“Em coming home tor the
weekend. I'd like a decent
dinner Friday night, and get
ready for lots of laundry.”

“Hey, wait 2 minute,” |
said out loud, when really I
only meant to think it. “It’s
not Thanksgiving yer. You're
not supposed to be home
until Thanksgiving.”
Fortunately, the kid has a
thick skin, and he was off the
phone and on to some party
somewhere so quickly [ doubt
he even heard me.

So, I spent the fast week-
end doing two weeks worth
of that really stinky big boy
laundry and trying not to
panic about the amount of
partying that’s obviously
going on at university.

I suppose I shouldn't
worry. I partied my brains out
when I was young and sur-
vived. Anyway, miraculously,
the minute the party boy left
on Sunday to go back to
