Ramon Orlando is walking the walk. The 64-year-old West Vancouver man plans to walk 152 kilometres (94.5 miles) in 10 days from Hope to Vancouver as part of a Multiple Sclerosis (MS) fundraiser on Aug. 20. Orlando, called Dr. O by his friends, was diagnosed with MS five years ago. He immediately retired from his job as an emergency doctor and family physi- cian associated with St. Paul’s Hospital. Orlando has raised money for the fight against MS over two years in sup- port of UBC's MS research clinic. Orlando says UBC is a world leader in research of the genetics link to MS. “The genetic component is probable 30% of the influence and the other 70% is in the environment. ifwe can control that 30% then there is no need to both- er with the other,” said Orlando. Researchers believe a MS vacci and cure will likely be developed within the next decade.
