(Please refer to last week’s commentary.) Merchants flourish, as do the arts. The coun- try is proud, and educators train young people to be truthful, brave and hardy. Schooling is tough. But this period eventually peaks out with money having a destructive effect. The young seek money rather than honor. Schools no longer teach virtue, but skills needed to com- mand high salaries. An Arab writer noted this about his society over 900-years ago. Another sign of the change in the society is increased defensiveness. Rather than fight, the empire tries to buy off its enemies. (Old Rome left openings in its forts through which it could launch counterattacks, bur these were aban- doned in the later stages of the empire in favour of high walls. ‘The Great Wall of China and the French Maginot Line were similar.) People are overly concerned with protecting their wealth, and are less willing to take risks. The military is frowned upon as primitive and immoral. Deep down inside, the intellect suppresses feelings of inferiority when the race thinks of the bravery of their ancestors. The difficulty with chis pacifism is that there are stil! hostile groups who are willing and ready to fight. Next column we will look at the last stage, that of affluence, and how it looks to the fall of the empire. Then we will look at today’s empires and their prospects. ° You are very likely struck by the relevance of this view to our current world.
