Lawyer Williams suggested that, because of this public embarrassment, Bouchard should only be given a suspended sentence, not a jail term. (Probation for Sex Assault, Feb. 23). Amazingly, Judge Allan Stewart gave Bouchard a mere 24 months’ probation. No wonder Bouchard’s supporters were. giggling their heads off in court, especially when the details the sexual assault were led out by the prose- . cuting lawyer, Hey, what could be funnier than genitals and breasts being mentioned in court, ch? West Vancouver were the losers and took out their frus- tration on a glass ition at the North Shore Winter Club as they left the game at its con- clusion. This thoughtless, childish and destructive act was disappointing enough but the reaction of a male parent to this act is what prompts my letter. A female club member approached one of the West Vancouver coaches and politely suggested thar the team pay for “West Vancouver were the losers and took out their frustration on a glass partition...” the damage and the coach politely agreed. The immature male parent overheard the polite conversa- tion, felt it was his place to step in and interfere, and used abu- sive language towards this woman, which is too disgusting to repeat in this letter. To my surprise, he also came very close to physically attacking her. This male parent is a disc jockey with a very popular focal AM radio station, which is all the more reason he should know how to act as a responsi- ble adult, instead of an abusive boor. Ir was a disgusting display which upset the recipient mem- ber so much that she was reduced to tears and put a real damper on one of the few games this Winter Club team has won. This is just another glaring example of how boorish par- ents like this fellow ruin an oth- erwise enjoyable sport by their moronic actions. C. Storjeoff North Vancouver Fl ted white, m.p. advertorial, March 12/97 DOUBLE VISION A few weeks ago, West Vancouver MP Herb Grubel recommended that | read the book Double Vision - "The Inside Story of the Liberals in Power" by Edward Greenspon and Anthony Wilson-Smith. He insisted that it was a remarkably accurate” account of what has heppened behind the scenes in Ottawa over the past three years, and that it explained much of the apparently *un-Liberal” behaviour of the present Federal Government. Stunned though | was at the $34.95 sticker price for the book, a quick scan of the first few ‘pages convinced me that ! would not be disappointed with my purchase. Messers. Greenspon and Wilson-Smith have managed to document an impressive amount of information from interviews with people who were present at Liberal Cabinet meetings, ministerial conferences, and even private dinners, complete with quotations from the key players. Much of the material has never appeared in the mainstream media, but certainly explains the decision making. process within the Liberal Goverment over the past three years. As an MP | have been much closer to that action than the average Canadian,. and. | agree wholeheartedly with Hert's opinion that "Double Vision” is a very revealing read, and is consistent with the facts as we know them from our experiences in Ottawa. | have never before made a “book review" the topic of one of my reports for the North Shore News, but "Double Vision” certainty warrants being: brought to your attention. DECEPTION OR 277 In my opinion, one of the mest powerful messages in the entire book — a message which resurfaces page after page, is that prior to the 1993 election, and even during the campaign, Liberal advisors, and dean Chretien himself, knew that Canada was on the verge of a fiscal crisis. in the days running up to polling day, Chretien, and/or his close advisors, were apparently meeting secretiy with Finance Department bureaucrats, while at the same time campaigning publicly on a fairly traditional Liberal “tax and spend” philosophy, a position which had to be abandoned after the election. The present PM was also dealing, via key advisors, with ihe President of the Untied States, committing not to derail NAFTA while promising publicly he would renegotiate the agreement. Finance Minister Paul Martin is portrayed as a major player in the implementation of the fiscal reforms, influenced by pressures from the Reform Party, and at times even challenging the Prime Minister's authority as he drew up his 1995 budget. In one of allegedly frequent outbursts at staff in his department, who were reminding him of promises made in the Red Book, Martin is quoted as yelling, “Don't tell me what's in the the Red Book, I wrote the goddam thing. And I know that a lot of it is crap. Don't be a slave to it." Then, the day after delivering the budget, and in a conference call with major clients of the U.S. brokerage house Salomon Brothers, Martin explained that the Reform Party constituied his main political opposition in most of Canada, that the public were supportive of the position taken by Reform with respect to the deficit, and he assured those on the call that he would stay the course through the electoral cycle. QUOTES AND CONTENT There are a great many revealing quotations in "Double Vision", so it is impossible to list them ail in this report. Two of my favourites, however, because of the interesting background stories which accompany them, are listed in the next pa-agraph. On page 281, in an attack on Sergio Marchi's $975 immigrant landing fee, which had widespread public support, Davis Matas, President of the Council for Refugees, is purported to have said, "I don't see any vestige of Liberalism in this. It could just as well have come from the Reform Party." On page 283, a quote from the Prime Minister in May of 1996 after Deputy PM Shella Copps resigned over the GST, “Sheila is a great politician.” He had already decided to return her to the position of Deputy PM after the by-election. One chapter in the book is devoted to the period just prior to the Quebec Referendum — a behind the scenes took at the cocksure strategy adopted by the Liberals, culminating in the staged: “spontaneous” public. rally of. October 24th. “ Another chapter... describes Lloyd Axworthy's. time . as . Minister. of Human Resources, the plans: ‘he had for - the Department, and how the fiscal reality deraited virtually every initiative he tried to push through Cabinet. It is frustrating enough to be in the Opposition in the Parliament of Canada, but the past few years have proven to be a devastating experience for traditional Liberals like Lloyd Axworthy and. Sheila Copps, who entered Cabinet positions in late 1993 expecting to implement new programs, only to see their departmental appropriations pared back. A GREAT READ If you have an interest in politics, make sure you read “Double Vision" before the next election. it is a real eye opener, even if it does end up feaving you with the same questions it left with me - "If Mr. Greenspon and Mr. Wilson-Smith were aware of cll this stuff as it happened, why weren't they doing a service to Canadians by simultaneously revealing the ‘stories behind the stories’ in the mainstream media? Isn't that supposed to be their job, or can we assume that the mainstream media is so pro-Liberal that it really didn't want you to know what was going on - that this Government really isn't any more ethical, or any more interested in your opinion, than the ones which went before it?” _ Ted White, MB, #302-1200 Lyan Valley Ra, North ‘Variceuver, BC. ‘va 1A2, Teli: 666-0585 Fax: 666-0509 and Television Industry Does working behind the scenes in the film and television industry appeal to you?
