Although she had come to the tent community of West Van- couver some 70 years ago, Reid was actually born in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England, the seventh in a family of nine children. As there were not many Oppor- tunities for young ladies at the turn of the century, Reid set out for Canada with another young woman, arriving in Vancouver via the CPR Railway in June 1905. She soon found a position with the Cornwalls, a family of ran- chers at Cherry Creek near Kamloops. Cooking for the crew and riding with the dudes over the sage covered hills, Muriel soon became known as an exceptional equestrian and an ambitious worker. Considered a friend of the Cor- nwall family when she left the position, Muriel returned to Van- couver where she met and married Lestock Blair Reid.
