The Aberdeen block

THE ARCHITECTS Mills
and Hutton designed this
stately Edwardian commer-
cial building in 1910, as well
as the adjacent Bank of
Hamilton Chambers that
together form a consistent
heritage grouping in Lower
Lonsdale.

The initial ‘‘K’’ is carved into a
shield on the sandstone entry of
this building because it was crigi-
nally called the Keith Block. It
was renamed the Aberdeen Block
in 1912.

This symmetrically-massed
brick and sandstone building has
an elaborately carved stone entry,
and the storefronts are substan-
tially intact. :

Being three storeys high, it was
used by the B.C. Electric Co. as
offices, warehouse space, and a
radio showroom.

NORTH SHORE
HERITAGE

The streetcar men’s offices and
a chapel were located in the
basement.

The first electric ranges on the
North Shore were displayed here,
and electric bills were paid here,
too.

The upper floors were used as
professional space; the North
Vancouver post office was here in
1911-1912, and the city hall oc-
cupied the third floor in 1914.

The most notable tenant, how-
ever, is Paine Hardware.

Very few buildings in any city
can -boast having an original
business that was begun and
operated throughout the history of
a building dating back to 1910.

Paine Hardware was first estab-
lished in 1906 on Ist Street and

moved in on the upper side of the
Aberdeen Block upon the build-
ing’s completion.

In the 1920s, Paine occupied the
lower storefront as well.

A trip to Paine Hardware is like
a trip back in time, with so many
of the store’s original fixtures still
intact and being used today. This
includes the edge-grained fir
floor, original light fixtures,
counter, travelling ladder, clock,
cash register, platform-scale, safe,
wood-burning stove, and hot
water heat radiators. .

Also in Paine’s possession is a
20-Ib. cast iron disc weight.

It was one of many used to

tether delivery horses as they |

made their stops up and down
Lonsdale in our earlier days.

The drivers would drop these
weights from their wagons and tie
the reins to them to keep their
horses from wandering off while
they made their deliveries. _
