Single-family residential lots in the neighborhood — currently zoned for 60 ft. by 120 ft. — can now be subdivided into 50 ft. by 120 ft. lots. “The people in that area resent and reject changes to their neighborhood and | don’t blame them,”’ said Ald. Ernie Crist, who opposed the ‘‘downzoning’’ along with Mayor Marilyn Baker and Ald. Joan Gadsby. “People in an area have the right to determine the character of their neighborhood,” he said. In past public hearings, residents often filled council chambers to capacity to voice oppusition to the newly-approved rezuning, saying it would ‘‘degrade'’’ the neighborhood. Residents cited fears that a zon- ing change would allow future developments and further subdivi- sion of lots, which would disrupt the ‘‘quiet, peaceful’’ neighborhood. Residents presented a petition signed by 24 people of the area’s 32 households, urging council to reject the proposal submitted by Gil Wardrop, owner of a home cn 1860 Burrill Street. Wardrop wants to split that property —— currently 100 ft. by 120 ft. — into two 50 ft. by 120 ft. lots. His proposal was the fourth at- tempt at rezoning the neighborhood. All three earlier at- tempts were rejected by council. Saying the rezoning would ‘‘only introduce two new homes to the area,’ Ald. Stephen McMinn urg- ed council to approve the rezoning, shortly before it was taken to a vole. “TY believe this is an appropriate change. There will be little or no impact due to the rezoning,’” said McMinn. 27th year “oF service to. tens of thousands of domestic & foreign car & light truck owners 1.C.B.C. vendor BCAA approved A.R.A. certified Quality workmanship — Trustworthy service 174 Pamberton Ave. N.
