Hear women writers in NV

WOMEN AND words will be
joining forces during an upcoming
annual writers’ workshop that is
being held on the North Shore for
the first time.

The two-week writers’ retreat is
an annual project of West Coast
Women and Words, a non-profit
society that has been in operation
since 1983. Its goals are to pro-

mote women as writers, editors
and readers.

Although 24 participants from
across Canada have already been
selected for the workshop, the
public will still have several op-
portunities to participate in ‘*West
Word VI,"" being held at the Ca-
nadian International College, 2420
Dollarton Highway.

On Saturday, July 28, prize-
winning poet Claire Harris, origi-
natly from Trinidad, will read
from her works. This 8 p.m. event
is the only one being held off the
North Vancouver site, at the
Native Education Centre, 285 E.
Sth Ave., Vancouver.

On Tuesday, July 31. at 7:30
p.m., instructors from the West
Word VI retreat will read at the
college, Hear Alberta resident
Claire Harris, local fiction writer
Sandy Duncan and Heather Men-

zies of Carleton University read
works from a variety of genres.

Dionne Brand, author of Lives
of Black Working Women in On-
tario, and Beth Brant, a Mohawk
woman and editor of anthologies
of native Indian stories, read from
their work on Friday, Aug. 3 at
7:30 p.m.

Another highlight, according to
workshop organizer and publicist
Ann Daskal, is a panel on racism
in writing that’s taking place on
Saturday, Aug. 4 at 2 p.m.
