Is the News
anti-Semitic?

Dear Editor:

Is the North Shore News anti-
Semitic? | am not sure as of yet,
but } am concerned about a certain
drift towards regularly portraying
the Jewish people in an unfavor-

able light.
Take the editorial cartoon on
Friday, March 23. A_ vicious

vulture-like bird is shown — ready
to devour a tiny dove. The large,
dangerous creature is identified as
the Likud party.

The implicit message is that once
again Israel is the problem. No one
else is on the scene. There is no
hint of any other predators (Syria,
Lebanese factions, Iran, Radical
Palestinians, etc.). Cartoons of
this nature confirm the pre-existing
media stereotype that the Jews are
the problem in the Middle East.

J am aware that the cartoonist
can claim that this is not an attack
on Israel, just on the Likud party.
The Likud party is certainly not
faultless in its method of gov-
erning.

But too often resentment of cer-
tain Likud policies by North
Americans has caused us to forget
a fundamental issue of concern for
all who call themselves Christians
(as do the vast majority of Cana-
dians). What is the fundamental
concern?

It is that we pray for the peace
of Jerusalem (Psalm 122:6). If we
Canadians spent half as much time
praying for Israel as we do criti-
cizing her, peace would be much
further ahead.

The Bible (which all Canadian
Christians believe in) teaches that
God ‘‘will bless those who bless
(Israel) and curse those who curse
them’? (Genesis 12:3). When we
condemn and abandon Israel for
not being perfect, we are grieving
Gad’s heart.

We in Canada live with the lux-
ury of endless secure borders on
every side. Tiny Israel has lived
since its miraculous rebirth in 1948
with continual violent attacks on
its very existence. Israel is hardly a
large vulture.

Rather { suggest the image of a
small David facing a very large
Goliath (the hundreds of millions
of Arab neighbors who resent
Israel’s presence in the Middle
East).

Israel is literally only one war
from extinction. They cannot af-
ford to lose even once. If Canada
had had one third of its population
exterminated by Hitler just a gen-
eration ago, we, too, would be
somewhat nervous and rigid.

Have Canadians ever repented
that we contributed to the
Holocaust of the six million Jews
by closing the door to Jewish im-
migration to Canada? Rather than
taking cheap shots at Israel as
Doug Collins delights in doing, we
should be asking their forgiveness
for our anti-semitic abandonment
of them again and again.

We as the nation of Canada,
under Brian Mulroney, have been
a very fickle friend to Israel, (just
check our UN voting record). In
our legitimate desire to be fair to
the Palestinians, let us not become
a ‘Judas’? to God’s Chosen Peo-
ple, the Jews.
