I think that both the car and I are getting too old to be safe on the road. Tam now taking the bus regular- ly, but I am finding it quite expen- sive. I notice that some of the other seniors boarding the bus have passes of some king and they do noi buy tickets. Would I quatify for one of these passes and where would I get one? Answer: To qualify for a Social Services annual pass you must be receiving either the Federal Guar- anteed Income Supplement or Spouse’s Allowance, or Provincial GAIN, either for seniors or for the handicapped. If you qualify you can phone 682-0391 (toll-free in the Lower Mainland) and ask them to send you an application form. The cost of the pass for 1989 is $36, but the pass will only be good for the rest of this year. It might not be economical for you to pur- chase a pass this late in the vear unless you travel a great deal. It might be better to send in your application in December for a pass starting Jan. 1, 1990, which would be good for the whole of that year. Once you have a bus pass, a renewal form will be sent to you automatically every November. Remember, if you lose your bus pass there is a $5 replacement fee. If you do not qualify for a bus pass you can purchase a Fare Card for $29 which will entitle you to unlimited travel on our local buses for one month, but in order for this to save you money you would have to be sure that you would use the bus at least twice a day for a minimum of five days a weex. \f you travel by bus less fre- quentiy than this you would be better off showing your Phar- macare card when you board the bus and paying the seniors fare, which is roughly half the regular fare. Qaestion: My husband aad I live in an aperfment which we ows in joint naines and we also have a jeint savings account of about $5,000. We have been living ou our pensions for the last few years. Recently my husband has become seriously ill and has been — in the hospital for the past month. T have been trying to become fa- tailiar with alt our affairs and to put them in order cow that I am managing on my ows, but I am concerned about what would hap- pen if my husband dies. Would our bank account be frozen and what would happen about our apartment? Answer: Most joint bank ac- counts are set up so that either one partner or the other can sign che- ques or withdraw funds, without the signature of the other. This type of account would not be frozen if one partner dies. Upon the. presentation of a death certificate the funds from the joint account could be trans- ferred into a new account in the name of the survivor. In order to transfer the title of a property held in joint tenancy into the name of the surviving spouse you would have to take the death certificate and the legal description of the property (as it appears on the property tax assessment) to the Land Title Office, 800 Horaby St., Vancouver. You will fill out a Form 17 ap- plication, a statement of citizen- ship, and a property tax return and pay a transfer fee of $35, and the property will be transferred into your name. £2 The North Shore Information and Volunteer Centre, a Unitecé Way agency, is located at 1060 Roosevelt Cres., North Vancouver, B.C.
