APPEAL OF TANS [IS QUICKLY FADING

A HUNDRED years ago, society
women believed that tanned skin
was a mark of the working class.

They kept their skin lily-white by
protecting themselves from the sun
using veiis, parasols and hats.

The fashion changed early in the
20th century when deep, dark tans
became 2 symbol of the leisure
class — displaying health, vitality
and the luxury of being able to
travel to tropical spots or spend
lazy hours sunbathing.

Now, the appeal of tans is
fading — but for reasons based on
fact, not fashion.

“If your skin is absorbing
enough sun energy to tan, then it’s
absorbing enough energy to be
damaged,”’ says Margot Franssen,
president of The Body Shop
Canada.

Dry skin, wrinkling, premature
aging, leathery skin, eye damage,
dry hair, skin tumors and cancer
are just some of the potential con-
sequences of tanriug.

Says Fransscn: ‘You have to
make a choice. Either stop tanning
altogether or know the facts and
be as cautious as possible. Many

people are going to persist in pur-
suing a tan. The key is modera-
tion. Plan your suncare program
carefully and stick to it.”

hazel and camomile. These ingre-
dients have been used for centuries
