Under the right condi- tions, conversion to propane can save substantial amounts of money. The conditions are a vehi- cle that is driven frequently and has a good engine, and a wide spread between the price of gaso- line and propane. A typical propane conversion of an automobile or light truck costs about $1,500. Vehicles can be con- verted to use either propane only (a dedicated system) or propane and gasoline (a dual-fuel system). Although dual-fuel systems avoid the risk of propane not being available when a refill is needed, they cost slightly more and are generally less efficient. As a result, dedicated systems are preferable, especially for fleet operations within urban areas. In order to recover the cost of Propane conversion a vehicle must be driven a significant number of kilometres. For a commercial fleet Operation, costs can be recovered in a matter of months. Although cost saving is usually the prime motivator for conver- sions, both propane and _ natural gas offer additional important Denefits over conventional trans- portation fuels. For example, vehicle maintenance costs are often reduc- ed with natural gas and propane. Because they burn much more cleanly than gasoline, propane and natural gas do not form a sludge or rinse oil from cylinder walls. Spark plugs can last twice as long, and the engine may be good for as much as 400,000 kilometres. Exhaust pipes and mufflers should last longer and the vehicle pro- duces fewer harmful pollutants. Driving on natural gas and pro- pane also means smoother idling and acceleration. Propane and natural gas are also as safe as gasoline. Propane does not puddle as a liquid, but if the vapors do 2c- cumulate they can be dispersed easily by air movement. Natural gas, on the other hand, is lighter than air and quickly disperses in the atmosphere when a leak occurs. Natural gas and pro- pane also require much higher ig- nition temperatures than gasoline. As supplies of conventional transportation fuels dwindle in the future, and their costs continue to rise, the gaseous fuels will assume growing importance in Canada and around the world. *Compac! flat chassis * Quartz PLL synthesized tuner * Seek (up) and manual up/down tuning * Local/DX switch #12 channel memory preset — 6 FM/6 AM ¢ FM Automatic Noise Reduction Circust (ANRC IV) © Biue daylight- view tiquid crystat display ¢ Auto-reverse * Program switch © Tape Advance e Metal (high bias) selector * Loudness switch * Separate bass & treble controls © Speaker fader @ Illurmnated cassette door and controls * Power antenna lead © Total max, power 12W.
