AS 18 — Friday, February 17, 1989 — North Shore News HOUSEHOLD TIPS Organize the kitchen IF THE lid to that plastic food storage container is on leave of absence, end the hunt. Organize your kitchen cabinets. Anzlyze what’s working for you now and what isn’t. Which small appliances and dishes do you use often and what could be stored elsewhere (or even eliminated)? Here’s a fresh took at this most often-used room in the home that can save you steps and time, not to mention frustration. The secret to success is to orga- nize one cabinet at a time. Do yourself a favor as you begin; wash the shelf, allow it to dry completely (while you sort and toss contents), then install an attractive shelf liner. Shelf liner heips protect fine cabinets too. (Later, it’s easy to clean shelves; just wipe with a damp cloth.) Getting this part dore will give you a feeling of suc- cess and a quick lift. Now, you're ready to tackle the bigger organization bugaboos. A well-designed kitchen has an efficient work triangle formed by three areas: the range and micro- wave oven, the refrigerator and the sink. Study what is stored in these areas. See if it’s efficient. This guide may help you decide where to put what. *® Range/microwave oven — In this area, keep pots and pans, mi- crowave cookware, platters and serving trays, muffin pans, baking and cooking utensils. Spices and herbs should be nearby but away from any heat source. Measuring cups/spoons and supplies like pasta, rice, cooking oil, canned foods and soups all go in this area. e Sink — Anything you need to wash, from casual dinnerware to potatoes, can be here. Keep things you use often (tumblers, mugs, food preparation gadgets and cutlery) at eye or waist level. Cutlery trays and drawer orga- nizers bring small items into quick order. A clean-up caddy installed inside the cabinet door beneath the sink can hide sponges, scouring pads, vegetable brush and other supplies. Hf young children are in the home, keep cleaning compounds high or install locks on cabinet doors. © Refrigerator — In this area, store food storage containers nested with lids beneath each con- tainer. Place unrefrigerated food where it’s convenient for food preparation. Inside the refrigerator, try turn- tables at the back of shelves to spin hard to reach items into easy view and reach. Short on cabinets or drawers? Wrap and bag organizers, made to hold various-sized boxes of aluminum foil, waxed paper and plastic wraps, can be installed in- side the door of base cabinets, on a closet door, or beneath a shelf or upper cabinet to free drawer space. Single and twin turntables help maximize space in cabinets; use them for smaller cans, condiments, or dishes and glassware. Another idea: install a high shelf around the kitchen to hold large appliances, mixing bowls or seldom-used items that eat up cabinet space. Use at- tractive baskets if you want things out of sight. Now, with a clean, fresh look to your cabinets and drawers, enjoy.
