SENIORS ON THE OVE Tips help the mature traveller THE AVERAGE age of the popu- lation is rising every year. Today, there are millions of Ca- nadians over age 50, constituting a large percentage of the total adult population. The mature, sophisticated traveller wants an exciting, smooth and safe trip. Heré are some practical tips that will guarantee just that: . © When organizing travel funds carry 90 per cent of your money in traveliers’ cheques. Unlike cash, they can be replaced if lost or stolen. © Prepare in duplicate a sheet listing 1.D. numbers of travellers’ cheques, credit cards, passports, visas, insurance policies and your itinerary. This speeds replacement, recov- ery and notification, in case of loss, theft or emergency. Take one copy with you and leave one home with a friend or relative. e When cashing a travellers’ cheque, write the amount and number of the cheque, and the time, place and date you cashed it. This information is required if you must report the loss of un- cashed cheques. Keep a record of all travellers’ cheque serial numbers and credit card numbers in a separate place. © Get. a medical history from your doctor before you leave on any trip. Be sure it indicates special health problems. © Bring two of everything — medication, prescription glasses, contact lenses and dentures. Carry them in your hand baggage. Keep a medical alert card in your wallet * or purse. _ © To find medical help abroad, ask your doctor for a list of reli- able practitioners where you are travelling. If you have no list, find the nearest university teaching hospital emergency room or call the Cana- dian embassy or consulate for a recommendation. e If you have special dietary needs and are travelling by plane, request special meals when you book your flight or tour. © If going abroad and travelling by car, contact your auto club or motor vehicle department for in- formation on international driver’s licences and possible restrictions. ® Memorize the international road signs, They use pictures in- stead of words. © Get a map of the city you are visiting with your hotel clearly marked, and obtain a map of the bus and subway lines. © Stay safe and secure. Even if you’re not travelling to an exotic foreign locale, or for long periods of time, don’t ignore security or safety precautions. Thieves, pickpockets and con- men operate domestically as well as abroad. LEARNING LASTS A LIFETIME! | Participate in some of the 1000+ courses we offer each term.
