Capilano hatchery epen to the public THE CAPILANO Salmon Hatch- ery will host its fifth annual open house for the people of the North Shore. The two-day event runs this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 29 and 30, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., regardless of the weather. The idea is to open up the “working’? area of the hatchery, not normally seen by the public, so visitors can view daily activities occurring year round. Hatchery staff will demonstrate and explain coho adult egg takes, adult trap sorting, scale reading, juvenile fish feeding, coded wire tags, tag dissection and reading of these coded wire tags. This is one of the few oppor- tunities the public has to see such activities. For more information regarding this free event call the hatchery at 987-1411. New rules made for law firms THE LAW Society of British Columbia has moved quickly to protect the public interest by establishing new rules for the operation of in-. ter-provincial law firms. ; Benchers voted to make B.C. partners responsible for ensuring that the inter-provincial firm to which they belong complies with the laws and rules governing the legal profession in B.C. This is a temporary measure. The Law Socicty will now apply for enabling legislation to license inter-provincial law firms to ensure that firms comply with the society’s rules. On Sept. 6 the B.C. Supreme Court ruled that the Legal Profession Act, which prohibited inter-provincial law firm mergers in which not all the partners of both merging firms were members of the Law Society of B.C., violated a lawyer’s right to freedom of association guaranteed by the Charter of Rights. The effect of the court decision was that the province may regulate, but not prohibit, inter-provincial law firms, and that regulation ‘‘should im- pair as little as possible” the freedom of association. If a member of The Law Society of B.C. steals trust funds, deliberately violates a rule of professional conduct, or exhibits incompetent conduct, the society has the right to take disciplinary or remedial action against the lawyer, since lawyers are regulated on an individual basis. However, the society would have no jurisdiction over other partners of the inter-provincial firm who are not members of the Law Society of B.C. It would have better controls, though, if the firm were licenced, and that is the change the benchers will be seeking.
