FBi agent, Rupert Anderson (Gene Hackman) is try- ing to humor his idealistic boss, Allan Ward (Willem Dafoe) as they enter the Magnolia State. Three freedom fighters have mysteriously vanished and, since two of them are white, the Bureau has been forced to investigate. Although Ward and Anderson work for the same agency, the around town *ee* — Excellent wet _ Very Good ** — Average * - Poor similarity ends there. Ward is a procedures man with a northern education unable to comprehend southern ways. When the locals’ hatred and fear blocks his enquiry, he over-reacts by bringing in a hundred men to drag the swamp and buying a motel to house the agents. He is grimly determined to shed some light on a town that seems to prefer the dark. On the other hand, the middle- aged Anderson was raised ‘‘just a spit from Tennessee” and the NOW, AROUND TOWN, the North Shore News’ entertainment listing, is the place to look for live theatre, concerts, galleries, dance events, and pub and club performances. Running every Wednesday, Around Town lists North Shore and Lower Mainland entertainment happenings. Deadline for the Wednesday appearance of Around Town is the Fri- day morning prior to listing. Ajter all, these folks learned hate at an early age, and now the worst of them express their view- points with firebombs or a noose. Their best bet in cracking the local KKK is Mrs. Pell (Frances McDormand), the wife of the town deputy (Brad Dourif), a sadistic variation of Barney Fife. Anderson senses her wavering loyalty and begins courting her with a handful of flowers and his natural good of’ boy charm. Hackman shines, as does McDormand, in their scenes together. Biloxi Slues ** (MCA) Rated M Once again, Neil Simcr tromps down memory lane. This latest in- stalment takes his alter-ego, Eugene (Matthew Broderick) to bootcamp in swetering Biloxi, Mississippi at the tail end of the Second World War. The usual collection of misfits are pounded into shape by an ec- centric sergeant (Christopher Walken) whose reactions may be the result of a steel plate in his head turning rusty. Eugene logs all the funny and bitter events around him, in- cluding his dream of getting some action at the local bordello before s€eing some action in the Pacific. Christopher ‘Valken is good and there are some laughs, but it’s nothing special.
