If they are in poor condition, loss of gas mileage, handling and stopping ability can result. Here are some tire care tips from industry experts. Irregular wear of bald spots or cupping appearing on the tire in- dicate the tire and wheel assembly are not properly balanced, possibly causing the wheel to hop or scuff. Remedy: the tire and wheel assembly should be balanced. Proper balancing will not only result in reduced tire wear, but will reduce noise, vibration and wear on the bearings, shocks and suspension. Feathered or frayed edges along the sides of the tread ribs indicate ice much toe-in or toe-out of the wheels. Incorrect toe caused the tread to rub or scuff on the road surface, affecting handling. Remedy: Have a_ professional check the alignment and make any necessary adjustments to correct the trouble. Worn iread on either side of the tire indicates excessive camber on the wheel assembly, causing the tire to run on one side of the tread, resulting in excessive wear. Remedy: Have the wheel align- ment checked and the camber cor- rected. Having wheel alignment checked once a year will avoid this problem. As well, alignment should also be checked if the vehi- cle pulls to one side. Wear on the outside: ribs of a tire indicates the tire has been . underinflated. Underinflation not only causes the tire to run on the outside of the tread area, but can also cause ex- cessive heat build-up, resulting in an increased risk of tire failure. Remedy: Keep the tire inflated to its correct pressure which can usually be found by consulting the owner’s manual or on the wall of the tire. Check tire pressure regularly, especially if a car has radial tires. Radials look ‘‘softer’’ than con- ventional tires, making it difficult Trunk supports now available HAVE YOU ever had to prop up your hatchback with a stick or piece of wood to keep it open? Now you can. eliminate these ‘ problems with a new replacement product that can provide the right support needed for proper hatch | and trunk operation. ; Availabl: for most popular pas- senger vehicles, lift supports are sold in most automotive repair stores as well as in automotive departments of numerous retail outlets. Each comes with easy-to- follow instructions for simple in- stallation that takes just minutes using common household tools. When your lift support lets you down, help may be in sight, the lifts lift away worries about weak hatches and trunks. to judge inflation by appearance alone. Excessive wear in the centre of the tread indicates that the tire has been overinflated. Remedy: again, keep tires in- flated to correct pressure. To get an accurate reading inflate tires when they are cold. When a horizontal band appears across the tire, the tire is worn out and should be replaced. Further wear can cause problems in brak- ing, handling and traction.
