Johnston was smitten by the shipbuilder’s bug last year when she was housebound by sickness. Her husband brought her a plank-on-frame wood model kit of a Chinese pirate junk to whittle away the long hours. She was hooked. Two to three hours of work a day and four months later she went on to win first prize in the World Ship Society Vancouver Division model ship kit category. “T find the hobby fascinating,” said Johnston, ‘‘AIl types of peo- ple come in here, from young boys to old boys and a few women.”’ Under the auspices of a gov- ernment job creation program, Johnston and a draftsman are cur- rently designing and constructing the prototype for a plank-on-frame kit of the Bluenose. THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF NORTH VANCOUVER TENDER CITY PROPERTY CAs vote for continuing ed MEMBERS OF the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia voted in favor of requir- ing their members in public prac- tice to take a prescribed number of hours of continuing education to remain current in their fields. The institute's president, Heathe: Shannon, said the move to compulsory continuing educa- tion is further evidence of chartered accountants’ concerns for the public interest. “Our institute is the only ac- counting organization in Canada which demands that its members in public practice take a certain number of hours of continuing education to make sure their com- petence is maintained,’’ Shannon said. Chartered accountants in public practice in B.C. will have to take 70 hours of continuing education over three years. The Institute of Chartered Ac- countants of B.C. is the largest ac- counting organization in the pro- vince with over 6,000 members.
