Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) spokesman Jackie Trueit said in a telephone interview Mon- day that serving non-alcoholic drinks at parties tonight is just one way to reduce drinking and driv- ing. “A big non-alcoholic punch in a bowl is a good idea," said Trueit, who lost a 12-year-old daughter to a drunk driver 12 years ago. Punch bowls also become cen- tres of social interaction at parties, she added. Trueit’s two daughters, 21 and 23, are hosting a large party at home tonight and offering numerous soft drinks for those who don’t want to drink. Tasty punches, daiquiris and fancy coffees can also be made without alcohol using fruit juices, soft drinks, whipped cream and spices. Sangria can be made without wine. Trueit said 10 years ago it would have been socially unacceptable to refuse to drink at a party but that has changed, particularly among young people. “It used to be that someone would take your glass when you finished it and pour you a stiff one,’’ she said. People of her own generation figure they have been drinking and driving for 20 years so they can handle it, she said, but that at- titude is changing among young people. At her daughters’ party tonight there will be a key check. Drivers must check iheir keys upon arrival and a panel of non-drinkers will decide whether they can drive home when they leave, Trueit said. Those incapable of driving will be driven honve. “You couldn’t do that among a group of older people,’’ said Year's ZONING BY-LAW AMENDMENTS NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE is hereby given by the City of North Vancouver, pursuant to Section 957 of the Municipal Act of British Cotumbia, that a Public Hearing will be held on MONDAY, JANUARY 5, 1987, at 7:30 p.m., in the Council Chamber of the City Hall, 141 West 14th Street, North Vancouver, B.C., to receive representations in connection with the following proposed amendments to the ‘‘Zoning By-law, 1967", and the “Zoning Map of the City of North Vancouver’, which is an integra) part thereof: 7550, located at 245 East 17th Street, North Vancouver, B.C., as indicated in heavy outline on the map befow, from RT-1 Two-family Residential 1 Zone to CD-116 Comprehensive Development 116 Zone, to permit construction of a three-unit townhouse pro- APPLICANT: COLNETT ENTERPRISESIN. In the contract four peo- ple of driving age agree to assist another member of the contract home if asked. Trueit said the contract, which demands no recrimination, has been very popular on the Lower Mainland and many have been handed out through North Shore high schools. Trueit said both parents and children could use these contracts as a way to discuss drinking and driving and as a means to get safe rides home after drinking. She said the contracts are good all year round but New Year’s Eve is a good time to sign them because the CounterAttack program prior to Christmas makes neople aware of the problem of drinking and driving. ‘Statistically, the worst time for accidents is the summer time - around graduation,” Trueit said.
