natural history and an-
thropology tour ef Northern
Vancouver Island on the
Labor Day weekend.

water and lands of Johnstone
Strait, provide an exciting in-
troduction to British Colum-
bia’s rich, diverse marine life
and to the unique Kwagiutl
Indian culture.

Johnstone Strait teems
with life at this time cf year

— seabirds, bald cagles,
seals, sealions, Dall’s por-
poises and minke, grey and
killer whales — as well as the
thousands of marine in-
vertebrates smothering the
seashores. ;
Participants will observe
whales, listen to their under-

water sounds and
beachcomb. They wiil ex-
plore a virgin coastal rain-
forest when visiting the
Tsitika River estuary. Ashore
at Village Island, is the
chance to study the site of an
abandoned native village,
which was traditionally in-

habited for several hundred
years. Next is a visit to
Gilford Island to see an ac-
tive village, one of the oldest
in the area.

Travel is by chartered bus.
Lodging is provided in a
guest house at Telegraph
