Of his work with perfumes, de la Renta says, ‘‘You have to do a lot of smelling.”’ Asked what his motivation was for entering the fashion industry, de la Renta candid- ly says, ‘‘Money.’’ But he adds, ‘‘If there’s only greed, money won’t take you everywhere. You must have creativity to continue in the business.’’ De la Renta describes his fashions and perfumes as feminine and romantic. He says his fashion inspiration comes from the women he designs for. ‘‘A_ designer’s job is not to dictate fashion, but to predict what a woman wants. To have a sense of what she wants.
