MEMO TO MULRONEY - Get elected first! Dear Editor: During my close to six years as a member of Parliament and since 1978 as a political observer, I often have had the urge to write letters to the Editor, but like I'm sure thousands of people do, I let the urge go by. Your editorial page, of the Wednesday, April 28th paper, was too important to let go by without comment. First, Peter Ward's Canadian Comment — “Free M.P.’s From The Party Line”. He is so right on this issue. 1 would hope my party would make this a policy. Joe Clark had started in this direction by giving the committees more power. When M.P.’s can vote on issues by their merits alone, we will get much better legislation. The bureaucrats will then have to draft legislation that meets with the majority of Canadians and not just what pleases the minister. Secondly, Noel Wright's columa Pierre’s ally — Brian Mulroney. You finished your column by asking the question, when will the Tories grow up? You are might on; Joe Clark is the man who put up the fight on the constitution — Joe Clark had an energy policy that would be giving us lower cost gasoline — Joe Clark i is an honest, hard politician who has been improving steadily as the years go on. Being a leader of any party is a difficult job. but surely most Canadians would prefer to see Joe Clark and the Conservatives im power right now. I would also question my Conservative colleagues who are openly supporting Brian Mulroney to ask themselves some questions. Why won't Brian Mulroney seek election before he tries to be amnointed leader of the Conservative party? Why doesn’t Brian Mulroney openly support Joe Clark as leader and tell everyone — I am running in the next general election? I can only suspect that if we don't ‘anomt Mr. Muloney as leader, that we won't see him ran and support the party in the next election. As I said earlier, Joe Clark ss an honest and _ hard working leader. He deserves a second chance to be Prime Minister of Canada. John Reynolds North Vancouver Thanks to ‘Good Samaritan’ Dear Editor: Please permit me — through your paper — to thank an unknown “Good Samaritan”.
