CiS - Wednesday, April 14, 1982 - North Shore News Trying to reverse a suicidal policy QUESTION: Every cloud | see through the window... and there are many of them... makes me think of Hiroshima and the devastation that reduced 100,000 people to ashes and shattered the bodies of others, leaving many to suffer lingering painful diseases. J ask is this the way to achieve peace and resolve conflict? I read that nadons are now equipped with a million times the bomb power of the first bomb used in Japan and I ask is this the way to resolve problems and build a world of trust and harmony? Has Trudeau abandoned his proposal (to the U.N. First Session in Disar- mament in 1978) to “suf- focate the arms race” in order to share in an insane escalation of destructive power in the most irradonal pretense of defence? What can I do? I don't want to be incinerated or see children blown to bits. Is there any way | can help reverse this suicidal policy before we obliterated? are all STEWART: Thanks for your timely letter. It is timely because the United States “requests missile tests over Canada” (Headline. The Province, March 10, 1982) and because a massive demonstration is planned for Vancouver during April 24 and 25. Feeling as you do, perhaps you will want to consider three things you can do. (] love it when people want to know what they can DO, instead of simply griping about somebody else!) Another asks Should | march? NOTE: Here is another letter, of a different sort, which con- cerns itself with the same issue. QUESTION: I have now received four different invitations to be a part of the big peace demonstration that is developing for Vancouver sometime this month. ['m in a quandry because I am all for the demonstradon and | hope there will be thousands and thousands tarn up and make a powerful witness for the world’s hope for peace. in my mind and heart I'm a dedicated part of the movement toward brotherhood. BUT, I'm nota demonstrator. I hate the thought of marching with a mob and carrying a placard. 20 % oft Most Custom Fabrics f yee or ome Re Uphatatery Eaempres Mardere Chacterfietd Moended Asmuheth 2708 00 Late AS yun at B20 ah OO $70) (rer 200 06 tM OG rot my abn 00 sordas 700 00 Vote Cer ge FOr ante Ome eerie tee Ae epee at ytee ard enemies * QUALITY WORKMANSHIP Shop At Home Service 0 emir: Hteere Biter mm 6 Spt ater eevee tn. te mein Me ite treredng we @ante wettts create Fey ce gree A 98H 1220 988 1525 Re-Upholster Now ° All Stock Fabrics Thousands of yards 30%-50% off eve Unver wnt Mate 8k pee WEN Vostmerite fem ave wwe efectos Woven Woods — Shades & Blinds Bedspreads — Orapes Fashion: hore iraCeRIiorns LCD HI Ma neces ate. You may not be a marcher, but perhaps you are a letter writer or a sponsor pr a_ financial supporter. Perhaps you'd feel OK about not “mar- ching”. if you got a letter off to the Pmme Minister right quick-like. (See the details in the letter above yours). And, of course, like all the rest of us. you can BE the change you want to see happen. That's absolutcly the only way any change eve comes about - for someone to BE that change. Write Prime Minister Trudeau urging him to stick with his 4 points to SUF- FOCATE THE ARMS RACE that he offered the U.N. First Special Session on Disarmament in 1978. At ore™ that time he proposed (1) A comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (2) A halt to flight testing of new = strategic delivery vehicles (3) Prohibition of all fissionable materials for weapons purposes and (4) Agreement to limit and progressively reduce military spending on new nuclear weapons systems. We are the ones who can stop-the arms race. No one can win a nuclear war. No one can survive a nuclear war. There is no defence. The first step is for nuclear disarmament.
