Inside, the children, five of them, are on a high. Chattering excitedly, they hurry their chores in time to watch tonight’s TV special. Just ordinary kids except for one thing. All are physically handicapped. This is Quinton Place, a residential group home operated by the North Shore Association for the Physically Handicapped (NSAPH). The Association was founded in 1975, in response to community need. It strives to represent the interests of all physically handicapped individuals on the North Shore. As just one of the Association's services, Quinton Place offers a family-style alternative to children who might other- wise be institutionalized. The children who live there are involved in all areas of community life, recreation, education and individual personal ac- tivities. As part of a “family,” they share chores and responsibilities. Because of its proximity, parents are able to visit often, joining staff and child in a total care program. On weekends when the residents returm to their own homes, their places are quickly filled by other handicapped children on a respite basis. Many adult handicapped live with their parents or other family members. Thus they continue to be dependent long past the time when most children would be on their own. It is hoped that an adult group home can be established in the near future. In the meantime respite weekends offer the individual and his family a break from the = stresses involved in his care. These weekends have included the Outdoor School, downtown Van- couver and a ferry trip to Prince Rupert. They are planned for variety and interest.
