both ankles, three ribs, two
fingers, his nose twice, had
his kneecap almost torn off
and shattered his rightelbow.
He is John Williams.

“King” John is the only
Canadian to ever win a warld
title with a motorcycle -- and
he’s done it five times on the
treacherous hills of the
Northeastern United States.

Hillclimbing is the name
of William's game and he
recently took his fifth world
title from a desperate horde
of American riders at the
infamous “Devil's Staircase”

North American small cars
are safer than Japanese-
made ones, but crash victims
still are twice‘as likely to die
in a small car than a large
one, insurance industry data
shows.

The data, based on actual
accidents, showed 1.6
passenger car occupant

deaths per 10,000 full-sized
cars in 1978-1980, compared
with 3.5 per 10,000 small
subcompact cars.

that he has not been able to
stop since seeing his first
event in 1957.

“I'ts something | love andl
just can't stop. I love to hear
the sound of the engine and
the feel of the bike ac-
celerating up the hill. It's
like sitting on a rocket when
somebody ignites it. You
either hang on or fall off. 1
won't be stopping for at least
another ten years.”

“No other form of com-
petition is like hillclimbing.
The bike can reach 90 miles
per hour going up the hill —
with the front wheel off the
ground. The main rule is that
you have to be in control of
the bike when it goes
through the uming lights at
the top of the hill.”
