’ About seven homes in the Capilano Road area of North Vancouver were flooded early Tuesday morning when a 26-inch water main burst at the intersection of Capilano Road and the Upper Levels highway. Distnct water superin- tendent George Rurka said that a call was received about |:30 a.m. to report the flooding and _ District workers spent until 5 a.m. stopping the flow and cleaning up the water. Homes on Garden Avenue, Tatlow Avenue, and Capilano Road suffered flooding damage as a result of water from the burst main. Rurka said District workers had to clear the floods NV homes Upper Levels exit road after it was covered by gravel. The municipality has recently tbeen doing some work in the area of the burst main, Rurka said. When contacted by the News Tuesday, Rurka said that only one small street was still without water as a result of the incident, and he said service would be resumed to that area soon. French program a success North Vancouver's French immersion program has received a favorable report card for the second year in a row. North Vancouver school board last week heard a report by Stan Shapson, the Director of Professional Programs at Simon Fraser University who monitored the Grade 1! classes involved in the program for their comprehension skills in the French and English languages. “Fhe total program is in its third year, with 217 students taking all their subjects in French, at the kindergarten, Grade | and Grade 2 levels. “The results (of the study) are quite significantly positive,” Shapson said. In French comprehension he said the North Van Grade 1 students performed better than 62 per cent of students taking similar programs in other parts of Canada. Shapson also said that studies show that by Grade 3 the students have the same level of English com- prehension as those who have all their schooling in Enghtish. This means, he said, that the Grade 1 students tested “will be bilingual” in two or three years. Don Fraser, who coor- dinates the program com- mented that the success of the program so far “is due to the excellent French teachers we have.” Fence hassle goes to council Some homeowners in the area of Loutet Park in North Vancouver are still not hap- py with the fencing of the park and the City is going to examine the possibility of further disguising chain link fence used in the area. Last fall, council approved a plan to use landscaped fen- cing around the park rather than naked chain link fence, to stop cars driving onto the playing fields But Alderman Mannco said at Frank Monday's Deluxe Burger and Fries Meeting that part of the fence opposite the 1500 block is still unlandscaped and residents have been complaining about this. Acting engineer Don Bndgeman said the _ par- ticular area involved had to be chain link fence in order to protect the children’s playing area - “where a higher degree of protection is required to stop them run- ning into the street.” The question of camouflaging the fence was $159 raised and council instructed the engineering department, in the spring. to see if the funds were available to land- scape the length of fencing. During debate of the issue, the problem arose again of the shortage of large boulders for use in landscap- ing. “The difficulty of getting them is one of real concern.” Bridgeman said.
