The majority of West
Vancouver apartment
owners and managers did
not respond to a recent life-
saving request by the fire
marshall, leaving the way
open for a major tragedy if a
fire should strike one of the

West Van Mayor Derrick
Humphreys told council
Monday that only 30
apartment managers and
owners out of 80 contacted
responded to a request by
the fire marshall to set up a
fire warden system.

“I bring this fire matter up
at this time, not because
there was a tragedy in Las
Vegas (the MGM Hotel fire
last weeek claimed over 80
peoples’s lives) ... but
because these matters will be
of great concern if
something should happen,”
Mayor Humphreys said.

Those most endangered
by the apartment owners’
lack of concern would be the
elderly and infirm since it
would be the duty of the fire

“It is a known fact that
doors to the roof of some
highrises in West Van have
double locks on them,”
Humphreys said.

(In the Las Vegas hotel
fire residents who managed
to reach the roof escaped
smoke inhalation and were
rescued by helicopter.)
