Firefighters had dif-
ficulties Monday reaching a
fire in a ducting system at
Saskatchewan Wheat Pool
which caused considerable
damage to the _ terminal’s
pellet production operation.

The fire is thought to have
started on the lowest floor of
the operation but leaped
through the ducting system
of all four flours, with flames
belching through the roof
exhaust.

A North Vancouver
resident who put out some
fireplace ashes in a plastic
garbage container beside his
house had a close call when
the container later flared up
Friday afternoon.

George Jones told North
Van District Fire Départ-
ment the fireplace at his
home at 2980 Thornclhifffe
had not been used for a
couple of days. He
suspected the fire which
started in the garbage he had
placed against an exterior
wall of the house may have
been caused by a cigar butt.

George Tyson said: “It was a
very difficult fire to get at
and put out. The ducting
runs up through areas 30 feet
high and we had to cut some
of the pipe up even to get
into it.”

Firemen were on the
scene for more than three
hours. _

Tyson said he felt sure the
fire was due to some kind of
mechanical problem, such as
an overheated bearing or a
fan out of line.
