Members of the project make wooden and stuffed toys which are sold and the profits donated to Red Cross work, both international and domestic. FU opens French An important develop- ment in French language instruction in British Columbia will be marked by the official opening of Simon Fraser University's French Language Training Centre on Friday, April 25, 1980. Through its language laboratory, videotape facility, experimental teaching area, workshop, reference and documen- tation rooms, the Centre.will offer students and teachers specialized programs and practical training in French and other language skills, among them English as a second language. The practical workshops designed by the Centre for teachers of French as a second language include such topics as com- municative activities where the emphasis is on fluency in addition to ac- curacy; determining § the effectiveness of the second language teacher; and identifying student's pronunciation problems with tips for correction without tears. Among the workshops for teachers of English as a second language is one designed for teachers who have non-English speaking Victor Amato SOPROVICH’S 926-5221 students in their regular classrooms, and there are sessions on curriculum design, the characteristics of authentic language, and teacher effectiveness. In connection with the opening of the Centre, a- bilingual conference, Teaching Communicative Skilis in a Classroom Setting, will be held at Simon Fraser on April 25 and 26. The conference is sponsored by the Canadian Association of Applied Linguistics. On Friday evening. April 25, Dr. Laurier Lapierre will address the conference. His topic is “Communication: Reaching Out", a discussion of the social dimension of language. In addition to his anguage centre work as chairman of the Commission of Inquiry into the Education of the Young, for Ontario elementary school teachers and in the media, Dr. Lapierre is adjunct professor in Canadian Studies and History at Simon Fraser. On Saturday, April 26, Dr. Pierre Calve of the University of Ottawa will discuss current constraints facing French language instruction programs. Dr. Calve is a leading Canadian applied linguist and co- author of Le Francais In- ternational, a method of teaching French as a second language widely used in B.C. high schools and throughout Canada.
