December 26, 1999 Appeai denied Katharine Hamer News Reporter GERALD O’Grady, the West Vancouver man con- victed of second degree murder in the 1992 siay- ing of his wife, has lost his final bid for an appeal. In a Supreme Court of Canada decision handed down on Thursday, O’Gradv’s attempt to have his conviction overturned in the highest court in the land was denied.. The retired taxi driver called 9-1-1 on May {8, 1992, insist- ing his wife had been attacked by an unknown intruder at the couple's Park Royal Towers apartment. O’Grady asserted that he had been watching television at the time of the murder. Beverly O*Grady had been stabbed repeatedly and was found lying in a pool cf bloud by police. The couple had been married for 35 years at the time, and both were in their early 60s. In a lengthy and complex series of trials, Gerald O'Grady was initially convicted of his wife’s murder in June 1993. That verdict was overturned on appeal in 1995, and a new trial was ordered. A second trial in July 1996 resulted in mistrial because ofa hung jury. O’Grady was convicted again in a third trial on May 9, 1997: almost exactly five years after his wife's murder. He has been free on bail since Nov. 22 of this year, awaiting the Supreme Court judgement. Now that option is closed to him. O’Grady will be spending the holiday season behind bars.
